Frequently Asked Questions
Product Features & Benefits
What is the composition of CalNext™ 190C & 196C?
CalNext™ 190C & 196C are patented polymeric biobased surfactants made from plant-based sources & contain:
Maltodextrin Caprylate (and) Cocamide DIPA (and) Potassium Caprylate (and) Methylchloroisothiazolinone (and) Methylisothiazolinone. Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside.
The hydrophilic head is maltodextrin from a plant-based source while the fatty acid tail is from palm oil. We are upcycling – maltodextrins made from corn or rice – a stream that would most likely be disposed and end up in landfill.
We can consider RSPO certification if customers specifically ask for it.
What are the typical applications for CalNext™ 190C & 196C?
CalNext™ 190C & 196C were specifically designed for excellent wetting, surface tension, and foaming properties for HI&I applications such as laundry detergents, manual dish wash, and mop-and-bucket cleaners.
Are CalNext™ 190C & 196C primary or secondary surfactants?
The new biobased surfactant can be used for both primary and secondary applications, but based on formulation knowledge, the CalNext™ 190C & 196C are more aligned in being secondary surfactants.
What are the advantages of CalNext™ 190C & 196C over other biobased surfactants?
Early biosurfactants had some drawbacks (such as poor foaming in hard water, poor solubility in cold water, and flowability). CalNext™ 190C/196C is highly compatible with other surfactants in hard and cold water.
Compared to APG, CalNext 190C & 196C are easier to mix into formulations (4x times faster) and require much less water to purge the surfactant from manufacturing equipment (tanks, pipes, pumps, etc.)
Pilot conducted third party testing to validate that these products are milder than SLS and comparable to APG in skin & eye irritation tests.
What is the HLB of these products?
HLB is approximately 17.5.
Are these products biodegradable?
Yes, CalNext™ 190C & 196C are expected to be readily biodegradable based on test results from similar formulas.
Is CalNext™ compatible with common cleaning formulation ingredients?
We have formulated CalNext™ 190C & 196C with many common ingredients found in typical household cleaners. We have not found any incompatibility yet. We haven’t seen incompatibilities with enzymes, bleach, or peroxide, and they are compatible with a variety of surfactants, electrolytes, acids, and alkalis. However, we have seen issues with elevated temperature in the process of making dried sheets or powders.
Customers can use thickeners such as carrageenan, xanthan, gellan, cellulose and steareth.
What is the TSCA approval status of these products?
EPA has approved the use of CalNext™ 190C/196C its listed on the TSCA with the following SNUR limitations of use:
Consumer Goods (Household products), the max usage rate is 40% (by weight of CalNext 190C or 196C) and product must be kept in aqueous form (i.e. no dried products). Spray applications are not allowed for consumer products.
For Industrial & Institutional Products, it can be used in any aqueous dispersion at any use rate, however, there is a PPE requirement of respirator use in spray applications.
The product is not allowed to be dried at this time and cannot be used as an agricultural wetting agent.
Do these products have CleanGredients Status?
We are in the process of completing this certification.
Are the products certified as USDA BioPreferred?
We are in the process of completing this certification.
What is the approval status for sale/use in Canada?
CalNext™ 190C & 196C are on the Canada Domestic Substance List (DSL) and meet the Reduced Regulatory Requirement (RRR) polymer criteria.
What is the REACh status?
REACh registration is dependent on usage and volume. Please reach out to reginfo@pilotchemical.com if REACh registration is needed, and we can review what REACh options are available for the specific business situation.
Availability
What is the typical size of a sample, and can I receive larger volumes?
The typical sample size is 8-oz, but we can easily offer larger samples for pilot plants, scale-up, or larger testing parameters.
Where is the product made?
The product is manufactured in Texas using traditional chemical manufacturing process – not fermentation.
What is the MOQ?
The typical MOQ is 4 drums on a pallet or 1 tote or a full tank truck (i.e., 42,000-lb). However, as we begin the introduction of this new product line, we can accommodate 1 drum (450 lbs) orders.
What is the shelf life?
Currently the products are rated at 1-year shelf-life.
